Global Gym vs. Foundation

10 a.m.  Abstract vs. Phenoms
The Defending Champions, Global Gym, will begin their title defense by facing the team that won it the first time around. Global Gym Team Captain, Lalo Arroyo, may sit this game out due to a sore back...from carrying the trophy, he claims. He is the only player to have 2 Championships in 2 seasons. Mike T. has inherited ownership of Foundation and is anxious at the opportunity of finally managing his own team. The 1st Season Finals MVP faces last season's MVP, Mike Villa.

Abstract and Phenoms are both back for a 2nd Season. The new look Phenoms will look to start strong while Abstract changed their name from Avengers, hoping that the memories of an ugly Fall '06 Season will be long gone. Phenoms SG, Ryan Francisco, is celebrating his birthday on game day and the last time he was at Palomares, he went for a record 8 three-pointers. Abstact PG, Jonash Salvador is back for a 3rd season and the fan favorite will try to make his 3rd All Star bid this season.

PREVIEW: Both Martin and Adrian Camarena contributed to Global Gym's success but after 1 season, they felt that it was finally time to lead their own team. Game Breakers is back for a 3rd season with a bigger lineup. Adrian Camarena was one of the best defensive players of the League last season whereas Jawayne White has been an offensive threat for Game Breakers. The winner of this match-up will probably determine who wins this game.

It's been a Week 1 tradition that when a team introduces a new team to the League, they get to play them in the 1st game. (Outkast and Team Dime last season) Relics Team Captain, Ernest Pablo, introduced Angkor Wat to the League. "I showed them the website and they were impressed." Angkor Wat is a foreign name to us and we were curious what Angkor Wat stood for. (It is a temple in Cambodia. Ahhh). Good job in recruiting teams, Ernest. Now go play them!

Freestyle will make their Superstar debut and they want to prove that teams from Inland Empire are just as competitive as the teams in our area. An outspoken Team Captain is well aware of their personnel and mentioned, "They have 5 quality big guys in that squad. It will be a good match-up against Marcus and Tab of Flight One." Flight One is managed by Outkast Connection's Anthony Palacol. Flight One makes its  return and it's the battle of the bigs as both teams showcase their big players in this match-up.

Billionaire Ball Club is back for a 2nd season and Team Captain, Andrew Persaud, loves to talk sh*t. It's always for entertainment and the candid leader brings back a re-tooled BBC squad that has their main core intact.  Thrillers Team Captain, Justin Reyes, also brought his main players back while making several free agent pick-ups in the off-season. Mike Wong is back and it will be interesting to see how Commish, Hanz Jimenez, plays with the SG. "I dissed him several times in the articles in the 1st season... I hope he didn't take it the 'WONG' way."

Relics vs. Angkor Wat

3 p.m.  B-LO-DA-RIM vs. Outkast Connection
Deacons, a new team from Hollywood, is a seasoned vet when it comes to playing basketball in recreational leagues. Bank is also new to Superstar but has a lot of experience in other basketball leagues as well. Both teams are new to the league and we have no scouting report on either squads. What we do know is that Bank will be wearing green and Deacons will be wearing blue. We also know that at 4 p.m., Commish and his staff will be very hungry and we're hoping that anyone from the 4 p.m. or the 5 p.m. will bring the staff some food.

Another Week 1 tradition in full effect. Outkast Connection's Anthony Palacol is always on the look out for good competition. Last season he recruited Team Dime to the 'L' and this season, he brings in B-LO-DA-RIM.  As a matter of fact, he's been working on this recruit since Week 5 of the very 1st Season. "I know this guy, he runs a church basketball league just like you used to. I'm trying to get his team." We met Team Captain, Lawrence Pelagio, and if his game is as nice as his jerseys, then we could be watching another notable game with Outkast.

Jay-R DeRamos had so much fun playing for Team Dime last season that he started his own team, Mindstate. The team is new to Superstar but has played exceptionally well in other basketball leagues. His team is experienced in multiple leagues in Southern California. Meanwhile, Swish is back for their 2nd season and their experience will be a valuable asset in this game. Expect a fast-paced ball game with both teams running and gunning. Rookie of the Season (Fall 2006), Ron Ninofranco, will be running the show for Swish while Jay-R (2nd in assists last season) will run the show for Mindstate.

Aztecs will be traveling from Hollywood and is the second team managed by Team Manager, Don Clark. The traveling team has played in multiple church leagues. Elements is back for a 2nd season and Team Captain, James Bernardo will be running the show. "I was never second in command," he says. Luke Montilla, the former Team Captain says that their leadership is equal and he promises that James will be contending for the title, Franchise Owner of the Season. If you're curious, winning isn't the only thing we look for in a Franchise owner. There are multiple 'ELEMENTS' to it. Just ask Luke... and Co-Commish, Tommy Avalos.

8 p.m.  DSK vs. Dynasty

7 p.m.  Deep Penetration vs. Team Dime
Dynasty returns for a 3rd season and historically, they wait until the very last minute to make their roster changes. This season is no different and the defending Eastern Division Champs is scrambling to find guys so they can return to the Championships this season. They face an unknown DSK squad that has yet to be scouted. It's almost the end of football season and it will be interesting who Dynasty recruits this season. In the Summer 2006 Inaugural Season, Dominic Robinson played for 2 games before heading to the big leagues. Last season, Aric Williams collected All Star MVP honors and Regular Season MVP honors. We wish him luck as he trains for his upcoming Arena Football League.

Global Gym's Team Captain, Lalo Arroyo: "I'm going for 3 straight titles."

Dead End's Team Captain, Emmanuel Guerrero: "We've played #1 Stunners before in tournaments. They're good. It should be a good game."

Dynasty's SF, Sealand Wu: "We were going to rest up this season but after getting so close...there's no way we're not playing this season."

Last season, Kris Carrillo, was referred to as 'The Kid' from Thrillers. Well... he is no longer a kid and the young PF is proving that by starting his own team. Team Dime's Allan Bacani leads his team back for their 2nd season and will be a player-coach since he will also be playing in the Platinum Division. "Team Dime is good but we're just guards with no big guys and we will just have fun." Allan brings back a Team Dime squad that went nearly undefeated last season and he's hoping to fly under the radar this season.

Welcome to the 3rd Season!! Hopefully everyone likes the new layout. This week's topic ... Pomona USD.

1. I really have nothing good to say about Pomona USD and I want to stay as professional as possible. With that said, I'll stay quiet... but if you really need to know what went down, talk to me about it.

2. It's not a good way to start the Season off but we can only accommodate for 7 games at the most. It's a good thing we have back up gyms and we'll surely make up those games between Week 3 and Week 7. I was hoping I can make my Thrillers debut this weekend but even I have to wait for my League opener.

3. AS A REMINDER, BRING YOUR ID's and your $30 REFEREE FEES. It's the 1st game of the Season and we will be taking Individual pictures for your roster.

4. The Staff. It's important you know who to talk to when you have questions regarding the League. Reggie Ramirez is our Head Referee. If you have any questions regarding the officiating or the rules, talk to him about it. Tommy Avalos is our Co-Commissioner. He handles the logistics and is in charge of finding local gyms where we can play our games. Lastly, Hanz Jimenez is your Commissioner. If you have any questions regarding the website, staff, rules, contact me at my e-mail...

Email:
commish@superstarbasketball.org

I usually check my e-mail at night. If it's important, just leave me a message on (dare I not say it) MySpace since uhh... it's uhh.. convenient. Just FYI, I have an 8 - 5 at Wells Fargo and I usually do the updates on the website at night after 10. If you catch any errors, let me know. I'm usually half asleep when I'm doing this and sometimes I'll catch the erros th next dayy.

God Bless,
Commish.

Co-Commish, Tommy Avalos shows his b-boy stance during a game against Xplosion. Xplosion defeated Game Breakers, 65-38.

There were only 4 games played in the Platinum Division but these guys managed to stand out during the 1st week of competition.

Adrian Camarena, Xplosion - 22 points, 1 block.
Victor Corella, Xplosion - 15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals.
Jovan, Deacons - 20 points, 4 steals, 2 blocks.
Mark Moton, Deacons - 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block.
Jeff Ramos, Bank - 14 points out of Bank's 35 points.

Player of the Week was no other than Adrian Camarena of Xplosion. 22 points to go along with his perimeter defense, which limited Game Breakers' offense.

It was a busy week for the Gold Division. A lot of rookies are making an appearance in the 1st week.

Ryan Mileski, Aztecs - 35 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists.
Brian Valladares, Aztecs - 22 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals.
Joseph Flores, Angkor Wat - 23 points, 4 blocks.
Jeff Ramos, Bank - 14 points out of Bank's 35 points.

Is there even any question who the Player of the Week for the Gold Division? Khorn Leng of Angkor Wat. 6 three-pointers, 6 rebounds, and the first Superstar player to hit 40 points. Congratulations, Khorn.
