POST SEASON AWARDS
MARCH 31, 2007
Khorn Leng unanimously wins MVP awards, Joseph Flores is Defensive Player of Season.
Superstar Basketball League announced its postseason awards for the Gold Division on Saturday afternoon. Angkor Wat's prolific scorer, Khorn Leng, averaged 37.6 ppg and scored a record 263 points in his first season. The sharp-shooter made 35 three-pointers this season to lead Angkor Wat to 1st place in the Gold Division standings. "There was really no question who the MVP was going to be. Without him, they lost to a playoff team, Elements. With Khorn on the floor, Angkor Wat is still undefeated," said League Commissioner, Hanz Jimenez. Angkor Wat lead the league in three-points made with a total of 60 three-pointers this season. They will face B-LO-DA-RIM in the opening round of the Playoffs and Angkor Wat has already registered in the Platinum Division next season.
The Defensive Player of the Season was awarded to his teammate, Joseph Flores. He recorded 17 blocks, 6 steals, and grabbed 62 rebounds for the 7-1 Angkor Wat. "He led the Gold Division in blocks and you know there's not a whole lot of defense going on in the lower division. Joseph did the dirty work down low and he put up some good numbers on the offensive end as well," commended Head Official Reggie Ramirez. He was named Player of the Week for Week 7 after scoring 26 points against former number one team, Aztecs.

Relics' Andrew Knox won The Rookie of the Season Award and the high-flyer was the first to dunk in Superstar history. He averaged 20.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, and 2.1 apg in the Relics first season. Andrew was the centerpiece of Relics success and as inconsistent as they were in the beginning of the season, Team Captain Ernest Pablo, made him the first option on offense and the move resulted in a 4 game winning streak which now has them as the 4th seed in the Playoffs. His Week 6 highlight on Elements was one of the most memorable moments this season. BBC's Alex Ivezaj was a close second for Rookie of the Season while Team Dime's Tony Johnson was a near third.
The Fantasy Player of the Season was Andrew Knox and his overall stats dominated the competition. He had 21 steals, 9 blocks and 24 three-pointers making the all-around player a landslide winner in the Fantasy Player category. Joseph Flores was a distant second and Alex Ivezaj rounded off the Top 3.
Elements James Bernardo and Luke Montilla became the first winners to repeat in a category as the tandem was awarded The Franchise Owner of the Season. Their MySpace page pioneered a new wave of team pages as Superstar teams have followed in their footsteps. While others are starting to catch up, they have made highlight videos that even had League Commissioner, Hanz Jimenez, interested in what the two have set out to do. "Last season, they had weekly e-mail threads and they used technology to motivate the team when morale was its lowest. This season, they filled up the stands and what made them the obvious winners was their Captain, Luke, WILLING to post a video of himself getting dunked on. We win some, we lose some, but when you accept humility, it proves your high level of sportsmanship."
One of the players that was looking forward to the Winter Season was BBC's Andrew Persaud. The Team Captain was a close second for Franchise Owner of the Season in Fall 2006 but this season, the leader's mission was to simply, "Wet the competition." After averaging 4.5 ppg and hitting 6 three-pointers in his rookie season, he boosted his average to 12.4 ppg, and finished tied for second with 24 three-pointers. "I remember his first week back in October...or was it September...some guys, I'm not gonna say who, but they were like...this guy is playing basketball? Easy win. Done. Nowadays, he's got confidence and he'll make that three-ball in your face...then talk about it on the message boards. His team is winning when he makes those shots..so it's not like he's being selfish either." said an anonymous Team Captain. Thrillers Melvin Watkins also improved tremendously in his Sophomore season boosting his rookie stats from: 7.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 0 blocks to 9.3 ppg, 10.4 rpg, and 1.5 bpg. A friend from high school was curious with Melvin's improvement and joked, "Melvin Watkins? Second in rebounds and blocks? Melvin? Wait...Melvin Watkins? No..." His improvement earned him an All Star selection and the full roster will be announced on Saturday evening.
