Rookie Sam Yeung of Parking Lot Pimps named MVP, Martin Camarena wins Franchise Owner of the Season
Superstar Basketball League announced early Saturday morning that Parking Lot Pimps' Sam Yeung was awarded the Spring 2007 MVP Award. Sam led the new team, PLP, to a division-leading 7-1 record and also led the division with 28 three-pointers. On Week 8, he knocked down 5 three-pointers against the #1 Stunners to win the Eastern Conference title and secure the top spot for the upcoming Playoffs. The rookie averaged 19.9 ppg, 2.1 spg but more importantly, his hustle and team play produced wins and a number one spot in the Playoffs. Ola Kaote of Cali's Finest was the runner-up for the MVP race.
The Defensive Player of the Season award was a close race between the top three defensive players. Foundation's Matt Lewis edged out Freestyle's Steven Watts in the narrowest of margins. Also a rookie, he led the Platinum Division in rebounding with 16.4 rpg. His 3.0 spg average was good for 4th and he led his team to a 6-2 record winning 5 straight games to close out the season. Freestyle's Steven Watts overshadowed his teammate, Andre Flores who won the award last season. He had a breakthrough season averaging 2.5 spg and grabbing 12.5 rpg. The two teams will meet in the first round of the upcoming Playoffs.
Young Gunnaz Alphonso White was regarded as one of the top rookies this season. His 21.8 ppg average placed him in the top 10 in scoring. The GM was the top scoring General Managers all season.
The Franchise Owner of the Season was awarded to Xplosion's Martin Camarena. The GM turned the team around in its second season from a 4-4 record to a 6-2 record. The team is regarded as one of the top defensive teams in the league and in our seasonal Exit Interviews, teams have mentioned that Xplosion as one of their favorite teams to watch.
One of the General Managers had this to say about Xplosion: "Favorite team, Xplosion. They hustle a lot, they play defense, and Martin has them playing as a team."
His teammate, Victor Corella, improved his scoring average from 12.8 ppg to 18.6 ppg this season and he led Xplosion in scoring this season. He worked on his outside shooting in the off-season and the extra time paid off after making 6 three-pointers last season and improving with 21 three's.
