ANAHEIM - Superstar
Basketball League announced the suspension of 3 players
as a result of the
incident that occurred on Sunday, December 10, 2006. The incident is the
first incident for Superstar Basketball League and Commissioner Jimenez
is hoping that it will be one of the few times he'll be suspending
players for disorderly conduct. "There were a lot of family
members and a lot of kids at the stands. We have to abide by the rules
and that is ZERO TOLERANCE for fighting. The fact that this happened
before the All Star Game, and the fact that we went almost 2 full
seasons before an incident occurred. I am completely disappointed at the
way our players behaved yesterday."
Global Gym and TEAM DIME are the number 1 and 2 teams in the League.
They first played against each other in Week 6 at Palomares Middle
School and 4 Global Gym players fouled out and the game was called since
Global Gym only had 3 players left. The game went into OT and TEAM DIME
won, 57 - 55.
The rematch was
scheduled 3 weeks later and the teams played for the #1 seed in the
Playoffs and for the Western Division Title. The incident occurred in
the 3rd quarter and Global Gym's
Mike Villa
was involved in the first scuffle with TEAM DIME's Jon-Jon Bacani. Jim
Bacani was involved in another altercation and was thrown out from the
game by the referee. The second altercation occurred 10 minutes later
when TEAM DIME's Center, Philip
Valon and
Martin Camarena
got tangled up when Martin went up for lay-up. Some say it was a
clothes-line, others argue and say it was a hard foul. Martin got up and
retaliated quickly in self-defense and some would say it was a shove,
others say it was a swing that fortunately missed.
Head official Reggie Ramirez had this to say, "During the time of the
incident, facts gathered coincide with the previous theory that Jim Bacani was the first to instigate unsportsmanlike conduct. Therein, the
side officials assessed technical fouls and he was ejected from the
game. Because of the actions from Martin in terms of retaliation, he was
assessed a technical foul but was permitted to continue to play. A
second incident occurred when he was fouled hard in an unsportsmanlike
conduct but the second time, Martin decided to retaliate by throwing a
punch. Whether the punch connected or not, it is defined as fighting
plus penalties assessed as defined by Superstar Basketball rules. Upon
further review, the continued action of Jim Bacani suspends him
permanently."
Global Gym won the game, 66 - 58, and players from both teams that
were selected participated in the All Star Game. Because a ruling wasn't
assessed until Monday evening, Martin was allowed to participate in the
All Star Game. "It's funny how both teams went at it and now they're
both buddy-buddies during the game. Actually I think Jay-R plays well
with some of the Global Gym players," commented Foundation's Alfred
Flores. The second installment of the All Star Game was an immediate
classic and it was a great opportunity for players from Global Gym and
TEAM DIME to warm up to each other. The game went into double overtime
and fans who stayed until 10:30 were treated to a classic. "So much for those
2 perfect seasons," said an apologetic Martin
Camarena during the All Star game.
The following
players will be serving suspensions:
Jay-P DeRamos, TEAM DIME –
Suspended for 2 games for
leaving the bench.
Martin Camarena,
Global Gym
–
Suspended from participating in the Playoffs.
Jim Bacani,
TEAM DIME–
Suspended permanently from all Superstar Basketball League Events.
NOTE: Suspended players aren't
allowed in the gym and if they are, the respective teams will
automatically be awarded a loss in the Playoffs. The opposing team will
automatically advance to the next round of the Playoffs.
